Exploring Our Local Heritage

The Southern Tier and Central New York are rich in history. When I first arrived, I learned a lot about the Eastern Europeans and Italians who immigrated in search of a way out of poverty and oppression. This was all new to me. Lately as part of the Diocesan Racial Reconciliation Team I have learned much more about the Haudenosaunee who lived in the area, about slaves in the area, and about at least one devastating military campaign.

Much of this story is told in historical markers and museums in the area. Please read the following article by the Rev. Becky Drebert with a side story and photos from our own Rev Deacon Kay Drebert. Once we can get out and about together, we hope to undertake field trips.
