A Message From Bishop Dede Duncan-Probe

on Recent Supreme Court Rulings

Dear People of God,

This past week’s rulings by the Supreme Court, especially Dobbs v. Jackson, have been deeply painful and have resulted in many of us feeling significant anxiety and emotional distress. Gun violence, women’s access to healthcare, and the degradation of God’s creation are emotional, complex, and for many, deeply personal realities. This is a time for compassion, understanding, mutual support and respect. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

Who we are as the people of the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York is unchanged. We are resolute in our commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, fulfilling our baptismal vows:

growing in our faith;
seeking and serving Christ in all persons ;
striving for justice and peace;
respecting each person’s dignity.
No one stands alone.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” I encourage you to actively support and encourage one another, and to prayerfully consider ways of supporting the well-being of people in your wider community.

Today, in keeping with our diocesan Rule of Life, I invite you to learn and to pray. On the diocesan website, you will find a copy of this letter along with links to resources on the Episcopal Church’s moral positions on gun violence, women’s healthcare, and creation care. This weekend, as we celebrate the birth of our nation, praying as always for our leaders, I invite your prayers for the Supreme Court Justices, including newly sworn-in Justice Ketanji Brown-Jackson. Let us also pray for one another and all who are feeling vulnerable, that we may offer hope and reconciliation in our hurting world.

I want to close with a blessing from St. Francis:

May God bless you with discomfort,
at easy answers, half-truths,
and superficial relationships
so that you may live
deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger
at injustice, oppression,
and exploitation of people,
so that you may work for
justice, freedom and peace.

May God bless you with tears,
to shed for those who suffer pain,
rejection, hunger, and war,
so that you may reach out your hand
to comfort them and
to turn their pain to joy.

And may God bless you
with enough foolishness
to believe that you can
make a difference in the world,
so that you can do
what others claim cannot be done,
to bring justice and kindness
to all our children and the poor.

Amen.

May our world be healed by love,

The Rt. Rev. Dr. DeDe Duncan-Probe
Bishop of Central New York

Christ Church Asked to Be a Gathering Place for Convention

Bishop DeDe has asked Christ Church to be a Gathering Place for the Diocesan convention in November. Only three other churches were asked to be a Gathering Place: Ss. Peter and John in Auburn; Zion in Rome; and Trinity in Watertown. Gathering Places will, for the near future, replace the convention being held in Syracuse each year.

Bishop Dede wished to try a "regional" approach to the convention this year as not only a cost saving to the Diocese as well as to the Churches attending, but also
to have delegates experience the benefits of smaller gatherings. The Vestry enthusiastically accepted the Bishop's request. Details of our responsibilities as a Gathering Place in future editions of Heads Up. Way to go Christ Church!

Vacation Bible School

Christ Church will hold Vacation Bible School the July 11th - July 15th, with the children leading worship on July 17.

Children and teachers will gather from 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and the children will take over the Sunday service the following week.

On two evenings, we will hold dinners for the campers and their families and others who would like to attend.

Contact Debbie McLeod if you are interested or have children, grandchildren, cousins, friends who might like to attend.

Two Positions Open: Part-time Sexton and Clerk of the Vestry

Christ Church has been blessed with wonderful property team leadership, currently Jim Davidson, who have undertaken or coordinated repair tasks around the church building and have kept an eye on the maintenance and condition of our space.

The Vestry decided to switch to a paid part-time sexton who would regularly check the building and who would coordinate and undertake repairs as needed.

We are working out the full structure, but please let Ed Sarzynski or Mother Elizabeth know if you have someone in mind, including yourself.

Nancy McGorry has served this church and the Vestry admirably as clerk of the Vestry. Accurate minutes and tracking of motions are important to our work. Nancy will be stepping down, and we are seeking someone as the new Clerk of the Vestry.

The main job is attending Vestry meetings and the annual meeting, keeping accurate minutes, sending these out for approval, and maintaining our Vestry notebooks. This is a volunteer position. If interested, please contact Kevin Shea or Mother Elizabeth.

Katie's Closet

We are currently looking for volunteers for a couple of hours each month to help with the clothing closet.

Thank you!

Christ Church Amazon

When you're shopping on Amazon, go to smile.amazon.com and list "Christ Church Binghamton" as your charity of choice. The Church will receive .5 % of your purchase!

Over $600 has been given to Christ Church from your Amazon purchases since its program began. THANK YOU for designating Christ Church to receive these proceeds. Every little bit helps.

Assisting Ukraine

Should you wish to assist people in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees, here are two opportunities to consider:

1) Episcopal Relief and Development has created a special fund and is working to get assistance in and to refugee communities. Your funds will be matched by the Diocese if you donate through them. https://cnyepiscopal.org. You can also write a check to Christ Church.

2) Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church on 230 Ukrainian Hill Road in Johnson City is sending shipments directly to Europe to assist people.

They seek brand new children's clothes, underwear, socks, medical supplies, sanitary items for women, and other personal hygiene items.

You can drop these off at Sacred Heart Church directly or bring items to Christ Church and we will take them to Sacred Heart.

Restrictions for Indoor Worship Services

Everyone will wear a mask when entering and exiting the sanctuary and when in line for communion. You may mask throughout the service and please return to distancing. We encourage everyone eligible for the Covid vaccine to receive it for their own safety and for the love of neighbor.

No offering plate will be passed. Gifts will be collected online or in plates placed near the Church entrance.

Parking in the Metro Center parking lot is available. Press the button and take a ticket to enter. Please leave the entry ticket in the car so that it is readily available when exiting. Ushers will provide a ticket which you will need to exit. Both tickets will be needed in order to exit.

Donations

Christ Episcopal Church remained and remains present to our congregation and the broader community in this time of pandemic. We thank all who have supported our work and worship and ask for your ongoing contributions that we may remain a positive presence in the lives of many and in caring for one another.
You can donate via our website at www.christepiscopalbing.com/donate/. You can now click donate to send your pledge or other special donations. You can donate specifically to CHOW, Katie's Closet, the Rector's Discretionary Fund, Organ/Bells Repair and Upkeep.

A big THANK YOU to those who already have!

Despite the changes around us we are a Church and a community that stands together in faith despite adversity. We feel fortunate to have each other during these difficult and uncertain times.

Come Let Us Worship and Bow Down

“The people stand or kneel.” This is a favorite rubric in the Book of Common Prayer, rubrics being our directions for worship. When included in the 1979 Prayer Book, this was meant to be congregation-wide, but we, true Anglicans, decided it was personal. We each can respond as is most worshipful for us, to stand or to kneel. …

A Few Thoughts on the Whole Story

A Few Thoughts on the Whole Story
Going about my day I can easily forget the flooding in Yellowstone, hungry children, mass shootings of other people just going about their day, and gruesome wars. I forget to look until W.H. Auden reminds me of the whole story and our tendency to avoid it in his poem “Musee des Beaux Arts.” (printed below) Auden considers two paintings: …
