Feast of St. Michael’s Noonday Eucharist

On the Feast of St. Michael’s and All Angels, Thursday, September 29, a service of Holy Eucharist will be held in the Lounge at Noon lead by Mother Katrina.

A Message from Mother Katrina

September 29 is the Feast of Saint Michael’s and All Angels. Michael and his war against Satan is described in the Book of Revelation. “Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
‘Now have come the salvation and the power
and the kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Messiah.
For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,
who accuses them before our God day and night,
has been hurled down.’” Revelation 12:7-10

In the Old Testament, Satan is an opponent of God or an adversary. Ha-Satan appears as a prosecutor figure in Job and Zechariah, a part of the divine council of angels. In these instances, a definite article precedes the noun to describe, “the Satan.” When these particular texts were translated from Hebrew into Koine Greek, ha-Satan was translated as diabolos or slanderer. The etymology of “devil” is the Greek diabolos to Latin (Germanic) diabolus to Old English deofol to Middle English devel to English devil. Also in the Old Testament, Satan without the definite article is used in 10 instances. In these instances, Satan is “the adversary,” either of human or angelic nature.

Scripture says that evil comes from the satan. Christians differ on whether Satan is a personal devil who literally exists or is a symbolic interpretation of evil. The Christian faith faces the painful reality of evil head on. From the Fall to the cross, our tradition recognizes the existence of evil and the power it has to corrupt and destroy. With St. Michael as an icon of warrior faith, we are called to put on the armor of faith and daily confront the evil powers and principalities which seek to fuel injustice and divide us.
Join us at Noon on Thursday, September 29, at Noon in the Lounge for Holy Eucharist, where as a faith community we will be nourished and encouraged by the sacrament and strengthened to fight the good fight.

Winter Warmth Project

Winter Warmth Project: Once again we will be collecting scarves, gloves, and hats to hang on our outdoor railing. These items are currently available at most dollar stores for $1.25. Last year over 300 sets were taken, not including the sets placed on our railing by members of the community which included faces masks for adults and kids, hand sanitizer, hot packs, new socks, mini umbrellas and rain ponchos, and more. Each year our winter warmth project and the community's awareness for this ongoing outreach program grows. Any donations you can make will be greatly appreciated!

Sunday School

Sunday School has started. There are two classes and a Nursery. There is a class for primary age children from preschool up to third grade. Another class goes from fourth grade to sixth grade. We meet at 10:00 am until approximately 10:30am. The children will come upstairs after the exchange of the peace so that they and their teachers can take communion.

We are glad to be back in person. During the pandemic the only class that met was the Intermediate class and they met only online. They did a great job and even had an E -Christmas Pageant in church. This year they are going to try having a hybrid class to accommodate students who can't come to church. We hope to see you in the classrooms and in church soon.

Please contact Debbie Pennington with any questions or concerns about Sunday School. Her email address is: dcleod@gmail.com or phone number: 607-760-7467.

Assisting Ukraine

Should you wish to assist people in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees, here are two opportunities to consider:

1) Episcopal Relief and Development has created a special fund and is working to get assistance in and to refugee communities. Your funds will be matched by the Diocese if you donate through them. https://cnyepiscopal.org. You can also write a check to Christ Church.

2) Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church on 230 Ukrainian Hill Road in Johnson City is sending shipments directly to Europe to assist people.

They seek brand new children's clothes, underwear, socks, medical supplies, sanitary items for women, and other personal hygiene items.

You can drop these off at Sacred Heart Church directly or bring items to Christ Church and we will take them to Sacred Heart.

Masks Suggested, Not Required!

The mask mandate for worship and fellowship has been lifted. However, given the high level of COVID in our area, mask use is suggested, particularly for those at high risk. Please remember that everyone has different comfort levels with masking and respect those who still prefer to mask and or distance. Thank you for your patience and understanding throughout these difficult times.

Donations

Christ Episcopal Church remained and remains present to our congregation and the broader community in this time of pandemic. We thank all who have supported our work and worship and ask for your ongoing contributions that we may remain a positive presence in the lives of many and in caring for one another.
You can donate via our website at www.christepiscopalbing.com/donate/. You can now click donate to send your pledge or other special donations. You can donate specifically to CHOW, Katie's Closet, the Rector's Discretionary Fund, Organ/Bells Repair and Upkeep.
