A Message from Mother Katrina
|
This week our stewardship focus is “serve.” There is a general weariness in America. The fatigue of stress from challenges wrought by the pandemic, the exhaustion of hyperbolic political rhetoric, and the strain of change has generated anxiety and pervasive weariness. It may seem that there simply isn’t enough energy to serve others in the midst of it all. Actually, serving others is one of the healthiest, best ways to overcome lethargy and find meaning. Humans are meant to be connected and support one another. So, it is energizing to participate in ministries that change lives. Spending time in Christ Church’s CHOW pantry or helping people in Katie’s Clothing Closet makes a huge difference in the lives of Binghamton residents. Serving in worship as an usher or singing in the choir connects you to the people who come to our parish. Raking leaves in our green space and greeting those who walk by is service, too. There are so many ways to serve, including serving on the Outreach Committee, soon to be formed. As we acknowledge that many are weary and focus on serving others, our scripture this week reminds us that God empowers us to new life and promises a hopeful future. We are enlivened in this way to bring hope and healing as we serve as Christ’s heart and hands in Binghamton.

A Reading from the Prophet Ezekiel
|
The hand of the Lord came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. He said to me, “Mortal, can these bones live?” I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” 4Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.” So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.” I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude. Then he said to me, “Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.’ Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will act, says the Lord.” Ezekiel 37:1-14

Consider the many ways you have been blessed and acknowledge that God is the source of it all.
|
- the power of God to bring new life when hopelessness pervades
- the Holy Spirit which renews weary bones and enlivens heavy souls
- the worship at Christ Church that nourishes and sustains our faith
- the community of Christ Church that nourishes and sustains our faith
- the city of Binghamton and its inhabitants, especially the vulnerable
- hearts to serve others within our church and outside our church
- wisdom to understand how we can affect positive change in our neighborhood
- the renewal of our life as a nation at peace internally and globally
- the wisdom and commitment to be good stewards of the planet and our wealth
God, maker of marvels, you weave the planet and all its creatures together in kinship; your unifying love is revealed in the interdependence of relationships in the complex world that you have made. Save us from the illusion that humankind is separate and alone, and join us in communion with all inhabitants on the earth; give us wisdom to discern how best to serve and hearts to do so joyfully, through Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, who brings new life through the the Holy Spirit, and who lives and reigns with you, for ever and ever. Amen.

Winter Warmth Project
|
Once again we will be collecting scarves, gloves, and hats to hang on our outdoor railing. These items are currently available at most dollar stores for $1.25. Last year over 300 sets were taken, not including the sets placed on our railing by members of the community. Each year our winter warmth project and the community's awareness for this ongoing outreach program grows. Any donations you can make will be greatly appreciated!
