Welcome to Christ Episcopal Church
Baptism and Transferred Feast of St. Mary Magdalene
Seventh Sunday after Pentecost
Holy Eucharist — Rite II
Voluntary
To Kill a Mockingbird
Elmer Bernstein (1992-2004)

This evocative summary of Bernstein's remarkable film score begins with a melody of childlike innocence. In fact, the composer wrote the opening theme to sound as if a child were randomly playing notes on the white keys of a piano.

Processional Hymn 232
By all your saints still striving
NYLAND

All praise for Mary Magdalene,
whose wholeness was restored
by you, her faithful Master,
her Savior and her Lord.
On Easter morning early,
a word from you sufficed:
her faith was first to see you,
her Lord, the risen Christ.

The Opening Sentences

Celebrant: Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit
People: And blessed be God’s Kingdom now and Forever. Amen
Celebrant: There is one Body and one Spirit;
People: There is one hope in God's call to us;
Celebrant: One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism;
People: One God and Father of all.

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Let us pray.

Everliving God, whose blessed Son healed Mary Magdalene, inspired her conversion. He appeared in the garden and revealed himself to her, who had loved him in life, witnessed him dying on the Cross, sought him as he lay in the tomb, and was the first to adore him, newly risen from the dead. She is apostle to the Apostles,so that the good news of new life might reach the ends of the earth. Mercifully grant that by your grace we may be healed of all our infirmities, know you in the power of his unending life and proclaim your Good News; in the name of Jesus who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading: Song of Solomon 3:1-4
Upon my bed at night I sought him whom my soul loves; I sought him, but found him not; I called him, but he gave no answer. “I will rise now and go about the city, in the streets and in the squares; I will seek him whom my soul loves.” I sought him, but found him not. The sentinels found me, as they went about in the city. “Have you seen him whom my soul loves?” Scarcely had I passed them, when I found him whom my soul loves. held him, and would not let him go until I brought him into my mother’s house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.

Celebrant: The Word of the Lord
People: Thanks be to God

Psalm 42, sung as WLP 727
As panting deer desire the waterbrooks
WOODSLAKE

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:14-18
For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. 15And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view;* even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view,* we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation;

Celebrant: The Word of the Lord
People: Thanks be to God

Sequence Hymn 183

VICTIMAE PASCHALI LAUDES

The Gospel: John 20:11-18

Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look* into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.’ When she had said this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew,* ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” ’Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Bishop DeDe has asked Christ Church to be a Gathering Place for the
Diocesan convention in November

Only three other churches were asked to be a Gathering Place: Ss. Peter and John in Auburn; Zion in Rome; and Trinity in Watertown. Gathering Places will, for the near future, replace the convention being held in Syracuse each year.

Bishop Dede wished to try a "regional" approach to the convention this year as not only a cost saving to the Diocese as well as to the Churches attending, but also
to have delegates experience the benefits of smaller gatherings. The Vestry enthusiastically accepted the Bishop's request. Details of our responsibilities as a Gathering Place in future editions of Heads Up. Way to go Christ Church!
Open Position: Clerk of the Vestry

Christ Church has been Nancy McGorry has served this church and the Vestry admirably as clerk of the Vestry. Accurate minutes and tracking of motions are important to our work. Nancy will be stepping down, and we are seeking someone as the new Clerk of the Vestry.

The main job is attending Vestry meetings and the annual meeting, keeping accurate minutes, sending these out for approval, and maintaining our Vestry notebooks. This is a volunteer position. If interested, please contact Kevin Shea or Mother Elizabeth.
Katie's Closet

Men's clothes are desperately needed, especially slacks and jeans (used or new) and underwear and socks (new). Volunteers are also needed for a couple of hours a month. Thank you!
Assisting Ukraine

Should you wish to assist people in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees, here are two opportunities to consider:

1) Episcopal Relief and Development has created a special fund and is working to get assistance in and to refugee communities. Your funds will be matched by the Diocese if you donate through them. https://cnyepiscopal.org. You can also write a check to Christ Church.

2) Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church on 230 Ukrainian Hill Road in Johnson City is sending shipments directly to Europe to assist people.
